TBT: Summer Daze (2010)
The sun beats down blindingly and my eyes squint behind my glasses. Your hand is sweating, I can feel it from your palm. We met behind the plaza in between our houses. No one ever finds us here. I have about twenty minutes before someone figures out that I am missing, that the screen from my window is not in properly.
You run your fingers through my hair, making it all fuzzy, like we have been doing something naughty. We haven't. I swat your hand away and brush away cookie crumbs from your lip. We always do this. Go into the 7/11 and buy a snack for each other rather than buying our own. We don't make enough for presents yet so Oreo cookies are my way of saying that I can't stop thinking about you.
You pull a Twizzler out of the package in my hand and put one in my mouth. They always taste sweeter when you're feeding them to me.
I pull up my sunglasses and stare into your eyes. They are grey today, that means you're excited, maybe to see me. You break open half of your Oreo and give me the side with the icing. You would kill for the icing side with anyone else, but with me you always offer, I never have to ask. I take it and give it a lick before handing it back to you. That's the closest we've come to sharing anything like a kiss. The closest we've come to saying more than we ever could.
You grab side and pull me into a hug. I'll have to leave soon. The hair on the back of my neck is getting antsy. It's usually a sign.
My chin finds the nook in your neck and I smell chlorine and sunscreen. You just went swimming. I imagine you in your bathing suit, coming out of the water to me who is sitting with my feet hanging in the pool. I imagine you giving me a bear hug while I yell at you for soaking my clothes. You'd shut me up with your mouth.
Your body moves away from me and I open my eyes. It's time for me to go. We usually end it here. Just walk away. I go left, you go right. We'll meet each other again. Some other time, same place.
You crumple your Oreo package and put it in your pocket. You use both of your hands to capture my face and kiss me smack on the lips. You let go after a second and put your hands in your pockets, staring at the sky. I don't breathe while I pull my sunglasses down and put a Twizzler in my mouth. You stare at me, waiting, and I smile. I squeeze your hand in response to your dimples and then walk away.
You just changed everything.
