One Word: Tires
The road was slick with rainwater, too much to get soaked up by the asphalt so it pooled on the surface, hiding the holes and blemishes littering the streets. The darkness had a anxious feeling to it, like the air was charged with an electric current, simmering between oxygen and water molecules, waiting to join together and strike. He pushed his foot down further against the gas pedal and the car groaned from under him as it shuddered to move faster. He wasn’t going nearly fast enough if this was going to work. The wipers were on the highest setting, obstructing his view, not that there was much to see. Both headlights had been burned out for months but no one ever stopped him. No one really cared. Trees started flying past the windows and low hanging branches sometimes whipped around the car, scratching the brown paint off and leaving marks all down the sides. The noise was louder than the persistent groaning of the car. He grunted and shifted closer to the wheel as if it were going to push the car forward more. He had to be patient if he wanted it to cooperate. Just gunning it would make the engine give up instantly. If you wanted something done right then you’ll need to do a little coaxing.
He felt something tug behind his mind. A flash of red hair, a sweet chocolate covered smile, a taste of a vanilla flavoured tongue. He shut his eyes momentarily.
When he opened them the straight wet road greeted him once again. Jamming his finger against the FM button only assaulted his ears with static. No signal was getting through the dark clouds and thick brushes of trees. Anything was better than nothing though, so he left the static to drown out the rest of the noise.
He slightly pushed against the gas again. When the groaning was hidden behind the radio, it didn’t seem so bad. The car push forward a little more and his heart started racing a little faster. He must be fast approaching, he could feel it.
Another memory tried to break through. A fear-laced scream, the crumbling of dirt, blankly staring into the depths of the void. He punched the dashboard.
Just a little further, he reminded himself. Just a little further and he would find her.
Asphalt tapered off into muddied road. The tires pulled slightly underneath the car, but thankfully his speed allowed him to keep moving without sticking in one place. His fingertips started tingling as the charge in the air bore down through the roof of the car.
He was so close it was almost unbearable.
He pushed his foot down the rest of the way, not caring that the car began to shake and the groan was replaced with a clanking that rose above the static. He passed the flowered decorated tree and hardly noticed that most petals didn’t survive the downpour. Shifting closer to the dashboard, he saw the edge of the cliff come up just ahead and set his face determined. He released the wheel and closed his eyes. The feeling in his stomach was much different than a roller coaster. His mind tugged and he felt tender fingers wrap around his heart pulling him down. The air felt heavy with energy and as he flew further down into the void, the sky lit up in the most magnificent way before the darkness once again swallowed the sky whole.
